REWAR

Attending Il-mosel university studying economics Rewar excelled at his studies. As a grade A student this should have entitled him to be transferred to a superior university, however, being a second class citizen, Rebwar is Kurdish, a transfer was not permitted.

Having watched several other less able students being transferred over the years and having been rejected once again he became angry and disillusioned.

Taking pen to paper he wrote a letter criticising the government saying that they did not live in a democratic society, that democracy was a toy in the hands of an irresponsible government. He posted this on the notice board at the university.

As a result Rebwar was arrested and detained, a letter of such content was punishable by a seven-year prison sentence or even death.

Rebwar's father feared for his son, he gathered what money he could and bribed a guard to release his son. Borrowing money from relatives he arranged for his son to leave the Country, the price $5,000.00. Rebwar travelled by lorry, he like many others before him had no idea where his journey would take him.

He arrived in England on 6 June 1999 and claimed political asylum.

In October 2000 he was granted status to remain in England.

Whilst waiting for this decision Rebwar kept himself busy as a volunteer, interpreting for hospitals, refugee organisations and the police, he speaks five languages.

He is now employed on a part time basis whilst studying a foundation course in history at university.

When funds allow he sends money to his father to help repay the debt incurred to his relatives.
