STEFAN

Stefan arrived in England June 1998, together with his wife and children.

Stefan is a Czech Roma. He waited two and half years for the decision in respect of his claim for asylum. The decision was negative.

The reason for this negative decision was that as there are laws in the Czech Republic in respect of discrimination, therefore a remedy should be sought in the Country of Origin. However, research has shown that Roma suffer discrimination and persecution all over the world including many so called developed European Countries. Research has also shown that, especially in Eastern Europe, the police do not enforce these rights.

The evidence from Stefan that he has suffered from discrimination and physical attacks is not in question. This must lead us to ask when does discrimination become persecution.

Stefan has appealed this decision.

During his time in this Country he has formed a band playing modern and jazz Roma music. He has made one CD, in conjunction with a project for schools. The aim is to provide a basic source of different cultural music within our schools.

Stefan also plays for many charitable events.
